Havayah is an outstanding educational service experience Jewish teenagers from the Greater Boston area, Haifa and Dnepropetrovsk. Groups of teens from the three cities come together to create and conduct a fun and educational winter camp for some 150 children of the Or Avner Levi Yitzchak Hebrew Day School in Dnepropetrovsk.
The Havayah "exchange" takes place over two weeks in mid-February. In addition, each of the three groups meets for a few months leading up to the trip for leadership training and preparation for the trip and camp. Teams of teens lead the camp programs. In each class there are American, Israeli and Ukrainian youth working together.
More than 350 Boston-area teens have participated in Havayah since 1995. Havayah has been acclaimed as a program that both impacts and strengthens participants’ Jewish identity, providing them a rare opportunity to discover common links with Jewish communities in the United States, Israel and Ukraine while developing important leadership skills.
